Kirtland Day 1: Well technically we started Monday with driving to visit Ashley Wilson in Fort Collins at her new house and new city. It was very delightful.
Then we stopped by to see Miweeze, my last great aunt on my Warburton side. She, at 93, made us hot chocolate and cinnamon rolls and we just loved visiting.
Finally we picked up Rob, who had to teach and had to come later and we went to bed excited to tour Kirtland tomorrow.
Kirtland, Day 2: We had to wait for Rob to teach his class, so shopped at the local bookstore and antique store before coming together to go to the temple, the Joseph and Emma home, and Kirtland flats. My parents enjoyed it all, but especially the historical asides Rob provided. Then we ate at an amazing sandwich place right outside of Kirtland before heading to Cuyahoga National Park to take the scenic evening train trip. It is a delightful way to see this national park, and we visited and listened to the volunteer tell us about the history, flora and fauna of the region. Then headed home to start the Thursday Murder club before bed.
Kirtland Day 3: After a nice breakfast at the local cafe, we walked a longer-than-we-should-have walk to the temple quarry and enjoyed that before heading south to the John Johnson house. However at the last minute, Rob diverted is to the Eliza and Lorenzo Snow family home where, to our surprise, the owner was getting his mail and he invited us in and showed us around and told us so many stories. It was a delightful surprise. Plus he has some amazing military paraphernalia so I think the next time Rex is in town. Steve Taysom should take a trip over. Then back on track to the John and Elsa Johnson home, which is always so interesting. Then we headed north to the Fairport Harbor, which just has a monument to the port where so many members came, but has an amazing lighthouse museum to learn more about it, plus it was a point of the underground railroad, has history about the Edmund Fitzgerald, and so much more. It's a grand little town well worth the visit for more board history.
Finally back to Kirtland to see the Isaac Morley settlement and then get ice cream from the creamery. Then quiet night finishing the delightful Thursday Murder Club.
Kirtland, Day 4: We checked out of our lovely Kirtland home and headed slowly to the airport via about three years sales and then the James Garfield home, which was beautiful and fascinating. Then I found a free Lutheran frisbee golf course right next door! It was so fun to play half the course and I loved that they had scriptures on each of the tees. Then we headed farther south to see the A Christmas Story house, which was right across from a diners, drive in and dives place that features perogies, perfect! And it was so good! Then it was time to take back the rental and head to the airport and jet home after a marvelous time with my parents in northern Ohio.
